VRV/VRV systems are very similar to mini-splits — they offer an energy-efficient, ductless HVAC option that gives users the capability of zone heating/cooling. The main difference between mini splits and VRV/VRF systems is the scale and a difference in a few features.
VRV/VRF systems are typically reserved for large, commercial applications. VRV/VRF systems can also come with a feature known as “heat recovery” which increases the system’s efficiency by being able to heat and cool simultaneously using heat energy transfer to other areas where it is needed instead of allowing it to disperse outside.
These systems work by utilizing individual air handlers for various zones of the building that are all attached to an outdoor compressor. The “VR” in VRV/VRF stands for “Variable Rate”, which represents these systems’ ability to adjust the flow of refrigerant going to each air handler as needed. This feature greatly increases the efficiency in large-scale applications and also allows for the simultaneous heating and cooling mentioned above.
There is no difference between VRV and VRF systems. The difference is entirely legal. VRV is an HVAC technology that was developed in the 1980s by a company called Daikin Industries. Daikin trademarked the technology as VRV which stands for “Variable Rate Volume”.
The technology eventually became known and used by other companies, who had to develop a term that wouldn’t infringe on Daikin Industries’ copyright on the term “VRV’. This led to the adaptation of the phrase “VRF” or “Variable Rate Flow” by the rest of the industry to avoid legal issues.
Being what is essentially the bleeding edge of large-scale HVAC technologies, VRV/VRF systems offer many benefits over other types of solutions. A few of the most obvious benefits enjoyed in buildings with VRV/VRF systems are:
